Creating Rose Cupcakes

Perhaps a tenuous link to Vegan MoFo today but these are vegan and it is food!

As much as I love food, I do have other interests too... One of these is being a member of Grim North Theatre - a theatre company based in Halifax, trying to create an interesting theatre experience for their audience.

We performed our most recent play at the end of July, and I donated some cupcakes for the raffle each night. As the title of the performance was "The Three Snake Leaves", and featured the characters Snow White and Rose Red, I decided to bake some red velvet cupcakes decorated with icing roses. (I used Ms Cupcake's recipe for the red velvet cupcakes as it makes beautiful cakes!)

As you can see, the white ones look a lot more like roses than the red ones -  this is all down to the piping nozzle. To achieve this effect, fit a piping bag with a Wilton 1M piping nozzle - this will get you the most rose-like effect. Fill your piping bag with you favourite vegan frosting recipe. Starting from the middle, pipe a spiral to cover the top of the cupcake. You should end up with a tight spiral in the middle which looks like the middle of a rose.

You can use a plunger cutter to cut out fondant leaves and tuck them under the icing at one edge if you like. I placed my leaves on top, as the three leaves were an integral part of the story we were performing...

You could even use them to make a cupcake bouquet!
